Belvoir Castle

Belvoir castle sits high up on a hillside near Grantham. It is in the county of Leicestershire but sits close to the Lincolnshire border. It has been in a continuous family line for almost a thousand years as the ancestral home of the Duke of Rutland. The walk up from the car park takes around 10 minutes and it is quite a steep walk. Disabled guests are able to park at the top of the hill.

What is there to do at Belvoir Castle?

Inside the castle itself, you will see many grand rooms which have been lavishly decorated. The kitchen is especially large with plenty to look at. The highlight is the big long salon with a huge bay window and some fabulous chandeliers. Belvoir Castle boasts some truly wonderful grounds and gardens. You can pay to look around the gardens without paying to see the castle. The walk is hilly and the paths vary in design and quality so take some good walking shoes with you.

There is a variety of walks which are on a map and also coloured arrows around the grounds. The grounds have been lovingly restored to the original design by Capability Brown. Around the grounds, you can find an ice house, subterranean passage, grotto, Lord Granby’s cave, Root and Moss house and much more.

They have recently opened a brand new adventure Playground at Belvoir Castle. Inspired by the iconic architecture of the Leicestershire estate and Belvoir’s past and present explorers, the playground covers four acres and includes a giant timber castle, ship and towers ideal for toddlers, to teenagers.

Is there food and drink available?

There is a shop selling drinks and snacks next to the car park. Plus in the castle, you will find a team room restaurant with the focus being on sandwiches and afternoon tea. You are welcome to picnic outside.

What are the main things to do?

Look around the inside of the castle, grounds with follies, walks and plenty to see. There are toilets and a cafe.

What are the ticket prices?

Castle, gardens and adventure playground tickets cost £18 per adult and £9 per child aged 4-16, under 4s are free and family tickets are available. Garden and playground-only tickets are cheaper.

Dog friendly?

Well-behaved dogs are welcome on a lead in the grounds and gardens, they are not permitted indoors or in the adventure playground.
