The Jungle Skipper Canteen restaurant in Magic Kingdom is one of the newest Disney World restaurants. We hadn’t actually planned to eat there. In fact, we hadn’t even made a reservation. I’m not entirely sure why I hadn’t reserved us a table anywhere for lunchtime at Magic Kingdom one day and after trying a few places I was starting to regret the decision.

However, we were recommended this place by a member of staff. I went shooting off to see if they had any tables available and we were in luck they fitted us in with just a 5-minute wait.

The Jungle Skipper canteen is a themed restaurant based on the famous Jungle cruise ride. It is located opposite the Swiss Family Treehouse in Magic Kingdom. Just on the edge of the Liberty Square area. The food is from a choice of Asian, African and South American cuisine.

The interior is very colonial with one large room and then 2 small rooms off it. We sat in the Jungle Room, a former family parlour of Dr. Albert Falls himself. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner service from 11:00 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Our Meal at the Jungle Skipper Canteen

We were shown to our table by a friendly member of staff. Jamie was handed what was becoming now standard colouring so we had a chance to sit back, chill and chat about our plans for the rest of the day at Magic Kingdom. The major bonus to this restaurant was the air conditioning. It was such a hot day and it was lovely to feel cool and relaxed.

Not bad for a four-year-old 🙂

Appetizers

We didn’t want to eat too much as we are not very good at walking around theme parks with full tummies. The starter menu (appetizers) has also changed a little since our visit. My husband chose steamed Chinese wontons and a shredded pork dish off the starter’s menu.

He enjoyed the Chinese food, however, he wasn’t at all keen on the shredded pork. Apparently, it was very fatty and I think it’s a good job that it is no longer on the menu. We paid $9.00 for the wontons and $11.00 for the shredded pork. These items aren’t on the current menu.

The shredded pork starter

Currently, the starters range from $9.00 to $15.00 in price. Two starters were just the right amount of food for him and neither was particularly filling. The starters (appetizers) are bursting with healthy ingredients such as noodles, mango, cucumbers, soup, falafel and beans.

Entrees

I wanted to go for a main dish (entree) rather than trying two different starters. I was recommended the ‘Tastes like chicken’ Because it is as apparently it’s their most popular entree. This is priced at $28.00. This is certainly not one of Disney’s cheaper sit-down restaurants.

Other dishes on the menu range from $21.00 for a curried vegetable crew stew up to $38 for Baa Baa lamb chops. There’s seafood, Thai noodles, lamb chops and more. It is certainly not somewhere to eat if you like plain food. It’s quite ‘adventurous’ for Disney food.

The tastes like chicken came with a chilli glaze and is served with jasmine rice and vegetables. I was warned that the chilli glaze is hot. I don’t know if it’s my palate but I could not taste any chilli on my chicken let alone experience any heat from it. Which was a shame. The chicken was incredibly tasty though and the crispy coating was delicious.

Tastes like chicken! Because it is

They had a choice of three desserts for adults priced at around $9.00 each.

Children’s Menu

They had a choice of two appetizers (starters) for kids priced at $3.00 each. This was a salad and a vegetable snack with dip. As with all the other Disney World restaurants we ate at they had a choice of 4 meals.

They were priced between $11.00 and $14.00 and included crispy chicken and a coconut concoction.

Kid’s Chef Tandaji’s crispy chicken

He chose Chef Tandaji’s crispy chicken with dipping sauce. It was quite similar to my chicken dish but without the bone and without the chilli (well if I even had any chilli). He seemed to like it and the portion is massive so we both gave him a hand. It was served with jasmine rice and vegetables. He had the fresh fruit for dessert which we were told no child had asked them for before!

Would we eat here again on a future Disney World holiday? Probably not. Yes, it was lovely and cool and yes it was nice and relaxed away from the bustle of the park. However, we weren’t overwhelmed by the food as we had been at some of the other restaurants. It wasn’t a bad meal, but it wasn’t the greatest.
