We recently had a rather wet day out at Wentworth Garden Centre near Rotherham in South Yorkshire. It’s not just a garden centre though as they have a children’s farm, historic gardens, gift shop, pet shop, play areas and two places to eat. The Bothy is a very recent addition and I’ve been keen to try it out.
I had heard that The Bothy can get very busy at weekends so I prebooked a table about a week in advance. When we were there we heard quite a few people turned away because they were fully booked. It’s really easy to pre-book a table as there is a section to do that on the Wentworth Garden Centre website.
The Bothy has been decorated with an arts and crafts theme and there are plenty of plants around the restaurant. They have large seating areas indoors plus a conservatory. There are tables outdoors but these can’t be reserved. In the past, a ‘Bothy’ was a term used for basic accommodation for gardeners or workers in Scotland. Wentworth once had a Bothy but it was demolished many years ago.
The room we were sat in had wallpaper that was very much in the style of William Morris. The tables were large and well-spaced. One thing to watch out for when you pre-book is that they reserve the right to charge £10 if you don’t arrive for your meal.
I panicked when I got home as I received a message from OpenTable telling us that we hadn’t turned up for our meal. As you can see by these photos we most certainly had. Luckily there was a way to message them and the mix-up was soon sorted. I was never charged £10.
The restaurant serves locally sourced seasonal food and there was a good menu with plenty of choice for meat-eaters. I didn’t notice many choices in the way of vegetarian or vegan food but their website does mention that you can ask your server for more information. They serve a breakfast menu, lunch menu, Sunday menu and dessert menu.
We were there at lunchtime where there was a small menu for kids and a choice of starters, mains, pizza, salads, sandwiches and sides for adults.
We decided to opt for a starter and main. My Mum chose the homemade soup of the day which was mushroom, her favourite. I opted for the field mushroom bruschetta which was divine. I could have eaten two of them! Prices were around £6-8 with sharing platters at £14. We were both very pleased with our starters.
We asked for the little fella’s food at the same time as the starters. For children, there is a Margherita pizza, battered fish goujons and Yorkshire pudding and sausage. All meals are £6 each. He opted for the pizza and it looked delicious and fresh. He ate the lot!
I was tempted by the pizzas for my main. They’re priced from £9-12 and feature interesting ingredients such as truffle oil, caramelised onions and fresh basil. The sandwiches also sounded good and were priced around £9. I finally decided on the sweet potato and chickpea tagine which was £12. It was nice but oh my goodness was it big. There was far too much for me to eat. The rice and bread were a bit dry but the tagine itself was very tasty.
My Mum opted for the slow-cooked beef and mushroom pie which she was over the moon with, especially the chips as she loves chunky chips. The only thing she wasn’t sure about was the mushy peas as they were a bit too minted for her taste.
The only person with room for dessert was my son. They do have chocolate brownies or a mini trio of ice cream for kids at £3.50 each. However, he opted to follow the waitress to look at the adult choice of desserts. They had cakes, scones, cheesecake, sticky toffee pudding plus other patisseries. He opted for the Victoria sponge cake which he loved. The desserts are priced at around £6.
Eating at The Bothy certainly isn’t a cheap experience but it is certainly value for money and we would definitely return.
