Bolton Castle

Bolton Castle

Bolton Castle, North Yorkshire, is one of the best-preserved privately owned medieval fortresses in Britain. It was originally built in the 15th Century. It’s not without its scars to its history and part of the castle is intact whereas others are a ruin. The ruins were mostly caused when it was besieged by Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War. A lot of this history is shown in the more ruined parts of the castle today through exhibits.

What is there to do at Bolton Castle?

There are a lot of floors and rooms to explore at Bolton Castle. There are 5 floors in total starting with workshops, guardrooms, wine cellars and more. Walking around a lot of these rooms feels like you are stepping back in time.

The first floor is the same level as the courtyard where you can see archery demonstrations, a guest hall and more. On the second floor, there is an old chapel room, a nursery (where kids can dress up) and a couple of other rooms. The third and fourth floors contain rooms in the surviving tower where royalty once stayed. Make sure you pick up a leaflet so that you can follow their recommended route.

Other demonstrations include a bird of prey display, archery and feeding of wild boar. You may even get the chance to have a go at archery during the demonstration. There is a small garden to look around which includes a mini maze which children will love.

You can also book a half-day falconry experience for an additional cost. There are a lot of public footpaths around Bolton Castle and it’s a perfect spot to also include a walk on your day out. You could even walk to Aysgarth Falls and back which will take around 1 hour 15 there and the same back.
