We were invited by Red Letter Days to choose a break away somewhere using their website. Red letter days has 1000’s of gift experiences perfect for the family member or friend that has everything. Or is incredibly hard to buy for. With Red Letter Days you can choose something that they will never forget. From driving experiences to pampering and from short breaks to a wide range of activities. There really is something for everyone.

Buying a Gift with Red Letter Days

It couldn’t be easier to buy a gift via Red Letter Days. Once you have browsed their website to find the gift you want you simply chose the experience or package and check out your order. Most of their packages are at a reduced price than if you were to book direct which makes for some great savings.

Your red letter pack will then be sent either to yourself or to the recipient. If you’ve bought something that they don’t want or can’t use then Red Letter Days offer a free exchange. There are then no unwanted gifts. Your recipient also gets 10 months in which to book.

Once they have received their red letter they can book their experience or stay using a card in the envelope. This will then require them to ring up to book. In the case of our stay at the Mercure in York, we just had to show this card to reception when we checked in.

Our Stay at the Mercure York, Fairfield Manor Hotel in York

A hotel escape for two at the Mercure in York is currently a little over £100 at Red Letter Days including breakfast for two. We had a choice between a double room or a twin room. As it was myself and my son staying we opted for a twin room. At peak times, such as in July this is a great saving as currently a double room in July costs around £140.00 away from Red Letter days.

Mercure York Fairfield Manor Hotel

We stayed on a Saturday night and visited the centre of York on both Saturday and Sunday. We stayed in the centre of York a couple of years ago and I had such a bad night’s sleep due to some very noisy geese. So this was a good location for us as it’s a really short drive away from one of York’s parks and rides and there are no noisy geese living nearby. The local park and ride is Rawcliffe Bar and it costs just £3.20 for an adult return. Children under 16 are free with a paying adult.

The hotel is set on 6 acres of parkland. Part of the hotel is the 18th Century Georgian manor house.

Our Twin Room

Our room was at the end of a corridor and we heard no one else during our stay. Not even a door closing which is always a blessing in a hotel. Our twin room was large with a vanity desk, TV, bathroom with overhead shower, safe, large wardrobe, luggage rack and tea and coffee-making facilities. We also had two seats and a table at the far end of the room. The room was clean, although perhaps a little dated.

Breakfast at the Mercure York

Breakfast was a buffet. They had a hot section with your standard English breakfast produce. They had bacon, sausages, tomatoes, fried bread, black pudding, beans, mushrooms and fried eggs. There was somewhere to make toast and they had plenty of fresh fruit. At the other end of the room, they had juices, a hot drinks machine, cereal, yoghurt and pastries.

The room looked like an orangery and it was certainly a nice room to have breakfast in.

We hadn’t run up a tab so checkout was really simple the next day – we just handed our cards in at reception. They also have a couple of rooms with tables and chairs for sitting and relaxing.
