Kidwelly Castle

Kidwelly Castle

Kidwelly Castle is located in Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is a Normal castle that overlooks the River Swandraeth and the town.

The remains of the castle that you can visit today date back to the early 12th century. They were originally created as a defence against the Welsh, although the castle fell to the Welsh several times that century.

Today the castle is relatively well-preserved and features a square inner bailey that has four round towers. These overlook a semi-circular outer curtain wall and include a massive gatehouse next to the river. The castle was used as a location for filming Monty Python and the Holy Grail and appeared in the very first scene of the film.
