Pontefract Castle is a ruined castle in the centre of Pontefract, West Yorkshire. Kind Richard II is thought to have died there and it was once the site of a series of famous sieges during the English Civil War.

What is there to do at Pontefract Castle?

The castle was constructed around 1070, although there is evidence of earlier occupation of the site. The castle was originally wooden and was replaced by stone over time. Little now survives of what once must have been one of the most impressive castles in Yorkshire. Today you can see parts of the curtain wall and excavated inner walls.

Entrance to the castle is free. A visit takes around 40 minutes and you can also book guided tours. There is also a relatively new playground plus a dungeon that you can go down into. They also host events, and activities usually during the school holidays.

There is a cafe and a restaurant serving hot and cold food and drinks. This is seasonal,, when it is closed you can purchase soft drinks from the shop.
