Washington Old Hall

Washington Old Hall is a National Trust-owned property located in Washington in Tyne and Wear, about a 20-minute drive from central Newcastle.

What is there to do at Washington Old Hall?

The manor house is the ancestral home of the first American president, George Washington and has been beautifully restored and authentically furnished inside. There are regular events, held in the building and guided tours run occasionally which are really informative and a great way to learn more about the Washington family. The house is quite atmospheric and feels a little eerie when it’s quiet. Wandering around the rooms makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time and it’s a great way to see how things looked in history.

Outside there are some small but well-maintained gardens and a small wooden play in the shape of a castle which is suitable for younger children. There are some seats and picnic benches dotted around the gardens so you can sit and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the gardens or a family picnic on sunnier days.

There’s a large grassed field past the maintained gardens called ‘The Nuttery’ which is home to various ways to encourage wildlife. There’s a bug hotel, small pond and bird hide. It’s a great space for children to explore and they regularly have nature trails and events where children can learn about the wildlife they might see.

Whilst Washington Old Hall is a very small attraction it’s a lovely place to visit on a weekday or during term time, while it’s quiet. It’s popular with parents with preschoolers as the grassed nature area is a great place to tire out little legs. It’s not somewhere to spend a whole day but a hidden gem to while away a couple of hours on a sunny day.

Is there food and drink available?

Visitors can eat in Washington Old Halls cafe which is set out in the lower gardens. It holds a few tables and service is always speedy and efficient. Prices are standard National Trust prices so can quickly mount. The menu is limited to hot and cold drinks, ice cream, cakes and some snacks. You are welcome to picnic in the grounds.

Free to members of the Nationa Trust or cheap. An adult standard ticket is £6, £3.00 for a child. Other pricing options are available.
