Newmillerdam Country Park
Newmillerdam Country Park is a peaceful woodland escape just a short drive from Wakefield, centred around a beautiful lake and surrounded by scenic trails. It’s a favourite spot for walkers, families, joggers and anyone looking to unwind in nature. The 1.5-mile surfaced lakeside path offers an easy, accessible route with lovely views across the water, while additional woodland trails provide more to explore for cyclists, horse riders and keen adventurers.
Rich in history, the park was once part of a grand estate, and you can still see reminders of its past, including the charming 19th-century Boathouse and original estate lodges. Today, the park is recognised as a Local Nature Reserve, home to a wide range of wildlife. Keep an eye out for springtime bluebells, bats swooping across the lake at dusk and elegant waterbirds like grebes and swans gliding across the water.
Families will find everything they need for a relaxed day out, with a convenient pay-and-display car park, accessible spaces and public toilets. There’s plenty of space for picnics, peaceful spots to sit and watch the lake and even opportunities for orienteering and geocaching for those who love a bit of outdoor adventure. Dogs are permitted in the park.
