Museum Overview
Powell Cotton Museum, Quex House and gardens are located in Quex Park in Birchington-on-sea, Kent. As well as the museum you can also explore the gardens and there are tours of the house.
The museum was founded in 1896 to house the owner’s collection of mammals and artefacts that he acquired on his expeditions to Africa and Asia. There are three galleries with stuffed animals on display. There are more than 500 African and Asian animals set against their natural habitats.
Also at the museum, there are further galleries with African artefacts, European firearms, weapons, porcelain and significant archaeological finds from the local area. Quex House is open to visitors and is open to guided tours only. There are a number of rooms which have been decorated with oriental and English period furniture. There are gardens set within 7 acres with a woodland walk, a historic walled kitchen garden and exotic trees. They also host a number of family-friendly events.
