Royston Cave

Royston Cave is located in the centre of Royston, Hertfordshire. It is an artificial cave located in Katherine’s Yard beneath the crossroads formed by Ermine Street and the Icknielf Way. It is protected as a scheduled ancient monument and a Grade I listed building.
The cave is a bit of a mystery regarding its past as there is no record of its age or its purpose. There are theories such as it was used by the Knights Templar or that it was a private chapel or a hermitage. The cave was first discovered by accident in 1742 and after excavations, it was discovered to have extensive carvings in the lower part of the chamber.
The carvings are mostly Christian in depiction and medieval in style. Many have studied the cave, theorising its origin and use. Entry is by guided tour only and tours last for around 30 minutes with 4 tours on open days. Access into the cave includes 21 steps and an incline to be ascended and descended.
