Whitchurch Silk Mill

Whitchurch Silk Mill

Whitchurch Silk Mill is a museum located by the river in Whitchurch, Hampshire. It is a 19th-century water mill and the oldest silk mill in the UK still in its original building. It is a working museum of national significance.

There is an exhibition of Victorian machinery with a Creel which is the only surviving example of its type still in use today. There are a number of looms which were manufactured between the 1890s and the 1960s. You can also see the original mill wheel and discover the system of interconnecting gears and shafts that transmit the power from the water to the silk winding frames.

Outdoors you can enjoy a walk around their gardens and enjoy views of the River Test. Ask at the shop about their nature trail as there are colourful markers to look out for. Make sure you take some duck-friendly food for the ducks on the river.
