Southampton Common

Southampton Common

Southampton Common is a large open space close to the centre of Southampton, Hampshire. The area supports a large variety of wildlife which includes one of the largest populations in Britain or the rare great crested newt. The common is around 365 acres in size and features woodland, rough grassland, ponds, wetlands, lakes and parkland. Its first written record dates back to 1228 and has possibly had the status as common as far back as 500AD.

There is a lovely nature play and water park area for children of all ages. It was designed to encourage adventurous play with features including a zip wire and a climbing tower. There are also swings, slides and roundabouts. The water area includes water sports, pumps and water wheels which are great for dam building or for splashing about.

There are three orienteering courses to suit all ages and abilities which all start from The Hawthorns Centre. You just need to download the map from their website and take a pen or pencil. Copies are also available to purchase from the cafe.
