1620s House and Garden

1620s House and Garden

1620s House and Garden is located at Donington Le Heath in Leicestershire. It is a surviving example of a manor house that was built in the 13th century and then modernised in the early 17th century.

What is there to do at 1620s House and Garden?

Inside the house is fully furnished to the time and a lot of what you see is the result of a recent refurbishment. It has been home to many families over its 700-year history but the Digby family, which included the Gunpowder plotter Sir Everard Digby have lived in the house for over 200 years.

It is towards the end of the Digby ownership that the recently refurbished house is focused. There are a number of period rooms to explore and there are usually volunteers that you can talk to. Outside there is a 17th-century style garden, orchard, herb gardens and a small maze.

They hold a number of annual events, including re-enactments, crafts, hands-on activities, drama and specialist demonstrations that interpret the history of the site and life at the time. You can also extend your visit by visiting the country park nearby and its woodland of some 6 acres.
