Museum Overview
Abbey Pumping Station Museum is located next to the National Space Centre in Leicester, Leicestershire. It is a museum with collections of industrial, technological and scientific interests relating to Leicester.
In the pumping station, there are four working examples of Woolf compound rotative beam engines which were made by Gimsons. These can be seen working on selected event days. They also have a number of educational displays, hands-on displays an old-fashioned film theatre and collections of artefacts and pictures ranging from domestic appliances to trams.
The museum also houses a collection of larger items within the grounds including a narrow gauge railway and some transport items. The railway is running on some open days. You can also see a collection of vintage road vehicles, some of which are operated on selected days. They have several fire engines, buses, a steam roller, a brewery lorry and more. For the kids, there is a technology-themed outdoor children’s play area and a sensory garden. Events include steam toys in action, railway days, family fun days and more.
