Amberley Museum
The Amberley Museum is located near Amberley in Sussex. It has a narrow-gauge railway vintage vehicle demos, old buildings and exhibitions set in a former chalk quarry.
Museum Overview
There are lots of different vehicles on display at the museum. In the Southdown bus garage, you can see a collection of restored buses and ‘tramcars’ from different eras. The museum also houses an important display of industrial narrow-gauge railway equipment, locomotives and rolling stock. Many of the locos have been restored to working order and one is run on most days on the museum’s narrow gauge track to provide free, transport around the site for visitors.
There is also a recreated village garage and cycle shop, a fire station, a railway hall, a bicycle collection, the Wheelwrights shop and more. In the railway hall, there are more locomotives, wagons and artefacts. A recent addition is the Polar Bear children’s play area. Kids can ride on a replica of their Bagnall steam locomotive and take a virtual ride through the use of video. During your visit, you may even see one of the steamroad rollers working.
The museum also has a number of exhibitions exploring the industry. There is a print shop, a Gin building, a brick drying shed, a wood yard, a machine house, a pump shop and a stationary engine collection. In Connected Earth, you can see the most complete collection of telephone instruments and overhead line insulators in the country. There are working phone boxes, switchboards, telephone exchanges and many other interactive displays Including an old-style post office where you can write a telegram and see it delivered by pneumatic tube to the teleprinter room.
The site also explores a number of crafts with workshops, some of which you can see their volunteers hard at work. There is broom making, stained glass, ironmongers, walking stick making, blacksmith, woodturners, pottery workshop and more.
If you want to extend your visit and stretch your legs you can head off on the beaten track on the museum’s nature trails. There is a playground with swings and other equipment next to the Limeburners Café and at the other end of the site at the Rail Hall, youngsters will enjoy Sticky the locomotive and the Children’s Station.

Dog friendly?
We are a dog-friendly museum and we welcome your pets and assistance dogs. Dogs must be kept on a short lead. Well-behaved dogs are allowed in all exhibition buildings, on our bus and also in our Limeburners Cafe.
