The castle is a Tudor Mansion within the walls of an earlier castle. It was built in the late 15th century by the Pomeroy family. It became a ruin around a hundred years ago and it has since become a popular tourist attraction. There are a number of legends associated with the castle and it is ‘reputed to be one of the most haunted castles in Britain.’ With two famous female ghosts, The Blue Lady and The White Lady.
You can explore the medieval gatehouse and the ruined great hall. There is an audio tour available to take around with you that is an entertaining look back at the history of the castle. You will discover the dungeon where Margaret Pomeroy was said to have been geld and find out more about daily life above and below stairs. The castle grounds are a haven for walkers with the woodlands offering a great opportunity to view the castle from different perspectives. Dogs on leads are welcome on woodland walks.
