Bute Museum

Museum Overview

Bute Museum is located in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute in Scotland. At the museum, you can learn more about the archaeology, history and natural history of the island through their extensive displays.

The museum’s collections are mainly concerned with recording and preserving the island’s past and they show examples of the wildlife which you might be able to see today. There is a natural history room with a collection of rock samples and the violent activity caused by its position on the Highland Boundary Fault.

There is the first evidence of man shown via a collection of Mesolithic microliths that were found in the south of the Island. Plus stone tools and items of pottery. There are bones and a skull on display plus Iron Age artefacts and metal working implements. You can also see cases of mammals and birds from a wide variety of habitats that reflect today’s wild occupants of Bute. Children can enjoy handling various natural objects on the touch table.
