Chillingham Castle

Chillingham Castle is reported as being Britain’s most haunted historic castle. It is located in the village of Chillingham, Northumberland and it is open to the public.

What is there to do at Chillingham Castle?

The castle was built in the 13th century and it has been a stronghold famed for action and battles. If you are brave enough you can even stay there and they run a number of ghost tours which include family-friendly ghost tours.

Around the castle, there are a number of rooms you can see including the Armoury, a still room with the painting of the haunting witch and a spooky dungeon which is lit by one small arrow slit. A trap door in the floor reveals the very genuine bones of a child in the vault below and you can see scratched markings from prisoners.

There is also a Great Hall, a lookout up on the roof garden and the Edward I room which has been restored to its 13th-century format. You can also see the James I room which has been named after his visit in 1603. Plus there is a dining room, library, museum hall, chapel and torture chamber.

Outside you can explore the formal gardens and enjoy walks in the woodland. The gardens are a rare survivor from 1828 with urns, statues and the longest herbaceous border in Northern England.
