Clearwell Caves in Clearwell, Gloucestershire is an underground museum with passageways and 4,500-year-old galleries. The spectacular natural cave system was once mined for iron ore and ochre is still mined today by the owners so that they can sell pigments to artists.

What is there to do at Clearwell Caves?

The mines were first opened to the public in 1968. Today you can explore some of the impressive caverns worked over the centuries by many generations of iron minders. Displays tell the cave’s story from the Stone Age to the present day.

Ten caverns are open for you to discover this fascinating but hidden world. For the more adventurous visitor, you can also book on one of their deep level caving activities. Children must be 7 or older to take part. The caving excursion lasts for 2 hours (adults £40, children £30). Safety equipment is supplied and they will choose a route to suit your group.

There are bonus activities and special trails during most of the school holidays. If you want to extend your visit why not take a walk around The Secret Forest? Access is usually free with your ticket or there is an honesty box.
