Dartmouth Museum

The Dartmouth Museum is located in the centre of Dartmouth in Devon. It is a small but interesting museum which houses part of the historic Butterwalk which was a terrace of rich merchants’ houses that were built around 1640.
What can you do at Dartmouth Museum?
The museum opened at the Butterwalk in 1954 after restoration from war damage. It is a terrace of four houses which were once located next to the quayside so that the wealthy merchants could keep a close eye on the loading and unloading of their ships. The building has subsided and distorted to the point that there is no true vertical anywhere in the building.
Three floors above the shops house the museum and there are three main exhibition rooms. The collection is mostly from a polymath ironmonger from Dartmouth who bequeathed his collection on his death. There is an extensive collection of artefacts, models, paintings and photographs relating to Dartmouth and the surrounding district.
