Dewstow Gardens and Grottoes

Dewstow Gardens and Grottoes

Dewstow Gardens and Grottoes can be found in Caerwent near Caldicot in South Wales. They are one of the lesser-known attractions but are reported as being one of the most interesting. They were built in the 1890s by James Pulham and Sons landscapers, rock designers and garden designers. The gardens were buried around the 1940s-1950s and then later rediscovered and excavated in 2000.

The gardens welcome families and they often have extra activities and events, for all the family to enjoy. The gardens are a wonderful place to wander in themselves with beautifully landscaped paths and decorative beds, waterfalls and pools. Beneath all this, there is a labyrinth of tunnels and grottoes.

The site is approximately 7 acres and they hope to continue their renovations as much as possible. The gardens contain many ponds but kids’ imaginations will be touched by the underground grottoes that were once buried by thousands of tons of soil. Most of the repairs have now been completed. The rock gardens are made up of a mixture of real stone and faded stone.
