Dunnottar Castle is a dramatic ruined cliff-top fortress in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It was once the home of the Earls of Marischal who were once one of the most powerful families in Scotland. The castle sits on a rocky headland on the northern coast of Scotland around 2 miles south of Stonehaven.

What can you do at Dunnottar Castle?

The castle is steeped in history and is not only a romantic but a haunting ruin. The castle may sometimes be closed due to bad weather and it can get pretty cold on the headland so make sure you wrap up, even on a warm day. It is advised that you check ahead before visiting. Walking or cycling to the castle from the nearby town of Stonehaven is recommended.

The ruins are spread over 3.5 acres and are surrounded by steep cliffs that drop to the North Sea. There is a narrow strip of land that joins the headland to the mainland with a steep path that leads up to the gatehouse.

Within the castle, there are various buildings you can explore including the Keep, barracks, storehouses and stables. There is a chapel and drawing room which are in better condition than most of the rest of the castle. The walk to the castle takes around an hour and it is not accessible for wheelchairs or buggies. The visit time of 3 hours includes the recommended walk there and back.
