Dunster Castle
Dunster Castle and Watermill is a National Trust property in Dunster, Somerset. It is a former motte and bailey castle which is now a country house. The house sits on the top of a steep hill and has been fortified since the late Anglo-Saxon period. The medieval castle walls were mostly destroyed at the end of the English Civil War. In the 1970s the castle was remodelled to fit Victorian tastes which made the castle more Gothic and picturesque,
What is there to do at Dunster Castle?
The gardens are the result of hundreds of years of planning, building and restoration. The gardens have four different microclimates which have resulted in a successful subtropical garden. There are some spectacular views over the Somerset countryside. There are child-friendly spotter guides to take around with you outdoors plus a natural play area. This area has been created from a giant Redwood tree that felled in the grounds. They also have a variety of traditional lawn games.
You can also explore the castle and its spooky Crypt, plus the kitchens and the sumptuous rooms that have been left as the family would have left them. There is also a restored 18th-century mill with two working waterwheels. As part of the 40th anniversary of the National Trust managing the castle, an underground reservoir has been uncovered underground. Visitors have the chance to head below ground to see the underground reservoir.
You can get to the castle via a West Somerset railway service. Boarding at Bishops Lydeard the steam engine takes in coastal views as it makes its way to Dunster station. A special coach connection will take you from the station to the castle and return you back in time for your departing train. Your train ticket includes the return train journey, the coach transfer and admission to the Castle.

There is a tea room serving hot and cold food and drinks. You are welcome to bring a picnic.

Historic castle turned house you can explore with crypts and an underground reservoir, adventure play area, trails and tropical gardens. There are toilets and a tea room.
What are the ticket prices?
Free for members of the National Trust or mid-range for non-members. An adult ticket costs £10, children £5 and children aged under 5 are free. Family tickets are available.

Is there parking?
There is a car park, there is a £5.50 charge to park, there is no parking fee for members.
