Things to do at Edinburgh Castle review

Edinburgh Castle is located at the top of the Royal Mile, high on a hill overlooking the Scottish city of Edinburgh. It is a historic fortress that dominates the skyline of the Capital of Scotland. Human occupation of the rock has existed since at least the Iron Ade (2nd century AD). There has been a royal castle on the rock since at last the 12th century. The castle’s residential role declined and by the 17th century, it was used as a military barracks with a large garrison.

You can pick a route around Edinburgh castle based on how much time you have to spare or what interests you the most. There are a couple of suggested routes on their website that take around 2-3 hours.

Highlights include the Fight for the castle exhibition. This is an immersive exhibition that tells the dramatic story of Edinburgh castle. The Great Hall is a wonder of medieval Scotland. It was completed in 1511 for King James IV and is one of the most superb halls in the UK. There are rooms you can see within the Royal Palace, a historic Stone of Destiny, St Margaret’s Chapel and Mons Meg which is a huge siege gun.

At one o’clock every day a gun is fired and you can watch the spectacle. There is a National War museum with a large collection of artefacts. A Prisoner of war exhibition with a recreation of the vaults as they would have looked when they were in use. Plus regimental museum s and more.
