Falkirk Wheel

Falkirk Wheel

The Falkirk Wheel sits in Tamfourhill, Falkirk, right in the heart of central Scotland. It’s perfectly placed between Glasgow and Edinburgh, making it an easy day out for families, travellers and anyone exploring the Scottish Lowlands.

The Wheel opened in 2002 as part of a major project to reconnect Scotland’s historic canal routes. For decades, boats couldn’t travel between the Forth & Clyde Canal and the Union Canal because the original flight of 11 locks had been removed in the 1930s. The Falkirk Wheel was created as a dramatic modern solution, a rotating boat lift that raises vessels nearly 24 metres in a smooth, elegant motion. It’s the only rotating boat lift of its kind in the world, and it uses remarkably little energy thanks to its clever engineering and perfectly balanced design.

The most popular activity is the boat trip, where you board a canal boat and experience the Wheel in action. The rotation is calm and almost silent, lifting you up to the aqueduct before gliding along the canal and returning back down. It’s a unique experience and a must‑do for first‑time visitors. Around the site, you’ll find canal‑side walks, viewing platforms, picnic spots and open green spaces perfect for families. The visitor centre offers interactive displays, information about the Wheel’s construction, and a café overlooking the water.

Families will find loads of outdoor fun, including mini golf, bumper boats, a kids’ activity zone, and a large splash zone perfect for warm days. There are also archery sessions, giving children and adults the chance to try something new in a safe, supervised setting. On the water, visitors can enjoy self‑drive electric boats, canoe hire, kayak hire, and stand‑up paddleboarding, offering plenty of ways to explore the canals at your own pace. For land‑based adventures, there’s bike hire with easy routes along the towpaths, plus the popular Segway tours run by the Scottish Segway Centre.
