Flag Fen Archaeology Park

Flag Fen Archaeology Park

The Flag Fen Archaeology Park is located near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire. It is a Bronze Age site which was constructed about 3500 years ago. Today it consists of more than 60,000 timbers arranged in five very long rows. These create a wooden causeway across the wetland where part of the way across a small island was formed.

What can you do at Flag Fen Archaeology Park?

Excavations were first carried out in 1971 ahead of the construction of Peterborough New Town. They discovered an almost intact Bronze Age landscape. Today it is also a haven for wildlife. You can visit the on-site museum to see one of the earliest wheels discovered in Britain and experience what life was like in a Bronze Age roundhouse. Children can have a go at archaeology in the ‘Big Dig’ which is a mock-up of an archaeological dig.

Families can enjoy their family-friendly walking trail around the site. There is also a play area for younger children. They also have their very own flock of Soay sheep which are similar to the sheep that our Bronze Age ancestors would have kept.
