Forde Abbey House and Gardens

Forde Abbey House and Gardens is a historic country house with award-winning gardens near Chard in Somerset. It is a former Cistercian Monastery that was built around the mid-12th century. It has a long and varied history and was mostly neglected in the 19th century. The current family owners have lived in the house since 1905.
What is there to do at Forde Abbey House and Gardens?
Much of the original monastery, including the abbey church was demolished in the period after the dissolution of the monasteries. Only two statues on display in the great hall remain today. Some of the monastic parts of the current house remain today such as the Great Hall, the cloisters, monk’s accommodation, upper refectory and the undercroft.
There are a number of rooms which you can see inside. The house is open between April and October and the gardens are open all year round. Make sure you pick up a ‘Children’s guide to the house’ as this will help make their visit more fun and interesting.
The gardens are Grade II* listed and they cover 30 acres. There are several water features, planted gardens and an arboretum. The gardens are home to the highest-powered water fountain in the country. There is no play area for the kids but they will enjoy exploring and stretching their legs.
Kids can also have a go at Letterboxing. You follow the trail around the garden to find the hidden boxes and stamps to mark the trail map. Based on the famous Dartmoor letterboxes, there is a prize draw for completed trails at the end of the season.
