Things to do at Fort Amherst review

Fort Amherst is in Chatham, Medway, Kent. It is an 18th century fort that was built to defend the southeastern approaches to Chatham Dockyard and the River Medway from French invasion. There are tunnels to explore, nature trails, cannons, soldier’s quarters, fortifications and a play area. Not only that but it is free, to visit.

The fort is set within 20 acres of green space all linked to the Great Lines Heritage park. You can enjoy a maze of underground defensive tunnels and once outside there are some spectacular views to take in. The tunnels were equipped with a well, toilets, gun positions, musket galleries and defendable gateways much of which you can see today.

There are daily tunnel tours at the fort and even ghost tours (from 8 years), the tours have a small charge. There are often displays during the day. At the base of the fort, you will find a wooden adventure assault course for kids.
