Things to do at Fort George review

Fort George is the mightiest artillery fortification in the UK, perhaps even in Europe. It was first built in the 18th century and is located near Ardersier in Inverness-shire, Scotland.

It was built to control the Scottish Highlands after the Jacobite rising of 1745. The current fortress has never been attacked and has remained in continuous use as a garrison. It took 22 years to build by which time the Jacobite threat had subsided. The fortification is based on a star design and is now open to visitors with exhibits and more, while it still serves as an army barracks.

At Fort George, you can walk around the main rampart that is more than 1km in length. In the Highlanders museum you can explore the fort’s history. In the Grand magazine, there is now a collection of weapons. This was originally designed to house 2,672 gunpowder barrels. You can see historic barrack rooms including a recreation of the soldier’s living conditions.

They have a chapel that you can visit, a dog cemetery, and if you’re lucky you might spot dolphins from the ramparts. There is a family-friendly fun fact-finding quiz that you can take around the site with you (this is available on site).
