Great Orme Copper Mine
The Great Orme Mines are located close to the centre of Llandudno in North Wales. They are the world’s largest prehistoric copper mines with a visitor centre, shop and self-guided tunnel tours.
The mines were discovered in 1987 during a scheme to uncover the local landscape. They represent one of the most astounding archaeological discoveries of recent times. The mines date back 4,000 years to the Bronze Age and they changed our views of the ancient people of Britain and their society.
Over the past years, the caves have been slowly uncovered and more tunnels have been found. It is now thought to be the largest prehistoric mine so far uncovered in the world. The self-guided tour takes about 45 minutes. Sensible shoes are recommended and there are a number of steps and slopes going down into the mine (and back up). Warm clothes are recommended as it can be between 5oc and 8oC down in the caves.
Some of the more spectacular tunnels and caverns excavated during the Bronze Age can be seen today. In a field nearby, to the south of the mines, you can visit a Neolithic burial chamber, from an earlier period in prehistory. The attraction is suitable for all ages. As the mines are not accessible to pushchairs, for babies and very small children they recommend a front carrier as this keeps them lower than your own head height. Back baby carriers are unsuitable for the underground.
