High Force Waterfall
High Force Waterfall is one of the most impressive waterfalls in England. It is located near Forest-in-Teesdale in County Durham and it is the most accessible waterfall that we have ever visited. We also walked to the other two local waterfalls, Low Force and Summerhill Force.
High Force Waterfall Review
There is a relatively large pay-and-display public car park at the High Force Waterfall. Here there is a kiosk where you can purchase your tickets to visit the waterfall. You only need to pay to visit High Force. They spend a lot of money keeping the site in excellent condition so it is well worth the fee. The path down is steep but we saw a wheelchair, a pushchair and a mobility scooter on the path.
The path down then stops at a viewpoint of the falls. Able-bodied people can walk down a few steps to some rocks that bring you closer to the magnificent waterfall.
If you want to extend your visit you can drive up the road and park at the car park for Summerhill Force where there is a visitor centre and some public toilets. If you walk down to the road and walk right there is eventually a public footpath off to Lower Force. This is a smaller version but equally beautiful. There is a fun bridge across the water. Some people walk from High Force to Low Force. It is a long way and it is on a road with no path so I wouldn’t recommend families do that.
If you head back to the road and head back to the car park you can then follow a path up to Summerhill Force. This is a smaller waterfall and although you can view it without getting too close the walk does get harder if you want to get closer. There is also a small cave tucked behind the waterfall, this is Gibson’s Cave.
