Knaresborough Castle is located in the higher part of the historic town of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. It is a steep walk up (or down) from the picturesque river and it was once a stronghold of medieval kings. It doesn’t look much today but you can visit what there is left and also an interesting Courthouse museum .

You can explore the castle independently or you can join a tour to discover more about the history of the King’s Chamber. You can visit the dungeon and scurry through the secret underground exit (sallyport). They have a computer adventure game that you can play and discover more about life in the 14th Century or explore how the castle may have looked when it was inhabited.

The Courthouse Museum is home to an original Tudor courtroom and in there you can learn more about Knaresborough’s colourful history. This is across the green from the castle and is easy to visit at the same time. There are also plenty of hands-on activities in the ‘Life in a Castle’ gallery as well as Civil War costumes to try on. They also host a number of special events, and activities throughout the year. If you fancy it you can also have a go at bowling or putting.
