Museum Overview

The Museum of Gloucester is located in the centre of the city. It is a family-friendly museum with artwork, Roman ruins and exhibits ranging from dinosaurs to local history.

They exhibit an immense collection of archaeological treasures including the world-famous Birdlip Mirror, impressive Roman tombstones and the Gloucester Tables Set which is the oldest complete backgammon set in the world. There is a significant collection of artwork and temporary exhibitions.

Children can explore the museum via a changing trail, make sure you enquire when you arrive. The museum tells the story of the city’s origins as a Roman settlement and its subsequent development through the Dark Ages and Medieval periods. The museum features interactive exhibits including a Roman kitchen playhouse and a medieval street. Parts of the original Roman Wall can also be viewed within the museum.
