Museum Overview
The Newport Museum and Art Gallery is located in the centre of Newport in Monmouthshire. The museum tells the story of Newport from prehistoric times to the 20th Century. There are temporary exhibitions so the museum always offers something new to explore.
The museum has been collecting evidence of Newport’s history, culture and environment since 1888. Today the museum cares for more than 60,000 objects, many of which are on display.
Their oldest objects date to the Prehistoric periods before people could write. The medieval collections feature Viking and Norman artefacts including important finds from castles, abbeys and priories. More modern items include tools, washing machines, other household equipment, wartime artefacts and more.
The museum has many works of art including works by Sir Stanley Spencer, L.S. Lowry and more. The museum runs holiday craft sessions for children.
