Penrhyn Castle
Penrhyn Castle is a National Trust property near Bangor in North Wales. It is a 19th-century neo-Norman castle that sits between Snowdonia and the Menai Strait. It was originally a medieval fortified manor house that was later rebuilt in the early 1800s.
What is there to do at Penrhyn Castle?
The castle is crammed with fascinating items such as a one-ton slate bed made for Queen Victoria, elaborate carvings and plasterwork and mock-Norman furniture. There is also a great collection of paintings and restored collections. The stable block houses feature a fascinating industrial heritage museum. The railway museum is dedicated to industrial locomotives. Today you can see a wide selection of engines, carriages, rolling stock and tools on display.
You can explore the grounds and gardens that are around 60 acres inside with a Victorian walled garden and more. Monstrous Gunnera plants dominate the jungle-esque bog garden. You can lose yourself amongst its leaves or head up to the thatched hut for a better view.
You could take a stroll off the beaten track and visit their hide-down by Afon Ogwen. Here you can take in the scenery and stroll along their new boardwalk created by their Woodland Rangers (wellies are recommended). There is also a nature trail circular walk that takes in the walled garden, a ruined chapel, a bog garden, a den and more. Within the grounds, there is a small wooden natural play area for the kids.
