Port Sunlight Museum

Port Sunlight Museum

Museum Overview

Port Sunlight Museum is located in the historical town of Port Sunlight near Bebington in Merseyside. Port Sunlight is a 19th-century factory worker’s village with parkland. Once you have purchased your entrance ticket you can return for free for the next 12 months.

The museum is packed full of tales and nostalgic items that depict the story and history of Port Sunlight. Port Sunlight was built by the Lever Brothers to accommodate their workers in the soap factory which opened in 1888. The name is derived from Lever Brothers’ most popular brand of cleaning agent, Sunlight.

You can find out how the village developed over the years, see displays of vintage soap and find out more about Ringo Starr’s first performance with the Beatles in the village in 1962. There are film shows, interactives, models and an array of interesting artefacts.

As part of your Port Sunlight Experience ticket, you can step inside a worker’s cottage and experience everyday life in Port Sunlight in Edwardian times. The recreated home of the Carr family were long-time tenants and they worked in the Lever Brothers factory. The cottage is next door to the museum.

A ticket also grants you entry to their new interactive family experience, SoapWorks. This has a range of interactive displays in the village’s historic school room. It explores why we need soap, how it gets made, the different ways we use it and more. There are also walking tours around Port Sunlight which last for 90 minutes.
