Rhondda Heritage Park
The Rhondda Heritage Park is home to the Welsh Mining Experience. Located near Pontypridd in South Wales visitors can experience the life of coal miners on a guided tour of a mine shaft. They are based on the former Lewis Merthyr Colliery site in the heart of the Rhondda Valley, it is a fascinating place to visit for all ages. The Black Gold Underground Experience tour is led by their guides who all worked the coal mines of the Rhondda Valleys.
They all have tales to tell of life underground and the history of the coal that was shipped from Rhondda all around the world. The tour takes around 45 minutes and there are a few tours each day. Booking ahead is recommended.
As part of the tour, you can also take a ride on Dram! This is their virtual ride that has a few surprises in store. They have free, interactive exhibitions which you can explore at your own pace. Also indoors there is a period recreated village street. They also hold a number of annual family-friendly events. The Energy Zone is great fun for children age around 2 to 13. There is sand and water play plus swings and slides. There is a giant spinning net, a zip wire and an area dedicated to toddlers.
