RHS Garden Harlow Carr

RHS Harlow Carr in Harrogate is one of Yorkshire’s most beautiful gardens and a brilliant day out for families. Set across 58 acres, the gardens are packed with colourful borders, peaceful woodland, streams, sculptures and plenty of space for children to explore. It’s a place that feels both relaxing and adventurous, with lots of natural features designed to spark curiosity.

One of the biggest highlights for families is the three fantastic play areas, all made from natural materials and carefully blended into the landscape. The play zones are dotted around the site, so picking up a map at the entrance is essential. Kids love the Craggle Top Treehouse, which has a mini assault course wrapped around it and a large wooden treehouse at its centre. It’s great for climbing, balancing and burning off energy.

Another favourite is the Logness Monster, a playful wooden structure with more climbing challenges and a giant “monster’s mouth” that children can crawl into and slide out of. Along the woodland paths you’ll also find smaller pieces of equipment, hidden corners and natural play features that encourage imaginative play.

Beyond the play areas, families can enjoy gentle walks through the stunning gardens. The stream running through the middle is especially beautiful, with little bridges and colourful planting that changes with the seasons. Spring and summer are the most vibrant times to visit, but there’s interest all year round.

Free to RHS members. Online, an adult ticket costs from £13.60 to 17.20, children aged 5-16 are £6 all year round, and children under the age of 5 are free. Tickets cost more on the day.
