Saltburn Miniature Railway

Saltburn-by-the-sea in North Yorkshire has a 15-inch gauge railway. The railway first opened in 1947 as a tourist attraction. The line runs south from Cat Nab Station (by the beach) for about 1/2 mile inland to Forest Halt where there is a woodland walk and gardens. It is listed as one of the country’s most famous railways.

The railway passes beside Skelton Beck and passes through grassland where there are picnic areas and a play area. You can take a short walk over the bridge to the Italian gardens and Victoria tea rooms. You can stay on for the return journey but where’s the fun in that?

The trains usually start running at 1 pm although can sometimes be a little earlier. If the ‘Trains Running Today’ signs aren’t out then you can assume the trains are not running today. If you don’t stop for a wander around the gardens a return journey will take around 20 minutes.

There is a tearoom at the gardens You are welcome to bring a picnic.

Miniature railway journey from the beach to woodland, there is a play area nearby and Italian gardens you can explore. There are toilets at the tearoom.

What are the ticket prices?

An adult return costs just £2 and children 5-16 are just £1. A family ticket is £8 and children aged under 5 are free.

Is there parking?

You can park in the Cat Nab car park which is a pay-and-display car park (can fill up quickly in summer).

Dogs are allowed on the train and should always be kept on a lead.
