Somerleyton Hall

Somerleyton Hall

Somerleyton Hall and Gardens is a country house set in a 5,000-acre estate near Somerleyton in Suffolk. It is owned and lived in by Hugh Crossley the 4th Baron of Somerleyton. It is renowned as one of the finest Victorian Stately homes in the country.

Things to do at Somerleyton Hall

The gardens are considered to be one of the finest in East Anglia and have been since the 17th century. There are over 12 acres of gardens to explore and each section is being re-imagined as a series of interconnected ‘rooms’. The West Front is the centrepiece and was restored around 2012/2014.

Other themed gardens include the White Garden which is a charming sunken garden. There is an arboretum, a walled garden and even a hedge maze. The yews for the maze were first planted back in 1846. The route is around 800 yards but it takes visitors rather longer to solve the maze’s mysteries.

The gardens are now home to a new Jungle Garden with swings for infants, a large play sand area with a sit-on digger and bucket and spades. They usually have family-friendly garden trails available for the kids. You can also see inside the house and there are rooms you can explore including a grand staircase hall, a ballroom and a winter garden. The hall is a Jacobean Manor house and there are many family portraits to be seen throughout the house.
