Stockwood Discovery Centre

This eclectic mix of a museum and gardens tells the history of Bedfordshire. There are things to do both inside and outside and it’s completely free, to visit. It’s full of all the quirky little things that you only ever find together in local museums!
What is there to do at Stockwood Discovery Centre?
If you, or the kids, are into transport at all then make sure you check out the Discovery Hall. There is a massive carriage museum plus cars, a steam engine, caravans and a beautifully painted truck. Stockwood Discovery Centre is right under the Luton airport flight path. There is a plane flying over the site VERY low every few minutes or so. Great for plane spotters!
Other highlights indoors include the Discovery Galleries, based in the old stables. This has exhibits from Saxon skeletons, a Bronze Age roundhouse and Roman coin hoards right up to the modern-day. For dinosaur fans, there’s a small palaeontology exhibition. There are some hands-on exhibits in this section, but they were pretty worn out sadly.
There is so much to do outside at Stockwood as well. The gardens are a real highlight. They’re separated into lots of little areas, all with their own theme. There’s a section devoted to the lives of bees, and how important they are. It’s an excellent contained garden that’s perfect for hide and seek. It also has a decent-sized playground area.
