Stoneleigh Abbey

Last Updated on April 17, 2024 by Suzy McCullough

Stoneleigh Abbey was once a Cistercian monastic house in 1154. It was converted at the Dissolution of the monasteries into a comfortable family home. It is situated south of Coventry in Warwickshire. The abbey itself is a Grade 1 listed building.

What is there to do at Stoneleigh Abbey?

There are extensive grounds and gardens at the abbey. You can take a stroll along the River Avon that runs through the grounds, see the Leigh Pet cemetery and the restored Pumphouse. The main house is only accessed via guided tours. The grounds were designed by Humphry Repton a famous landscape gardener back in the 18th century.

Works have begun to fully restore the gardens to how Repton intended them to be including spectacular views of the house. There will be bridges reinstated and restored and even more walks will be reinstated and reopened.

If you want to book a guided tour of the house this can be booked as an extra when you book your tickets to Stoneleigh. The tour takes you on a journey through the West Wing of the house and gives visitors a real insight into how the house was used and looked at its peak.
