Stump Cross Caverns

Stump Cross Caverns

Stump Cross Caverns are located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales in North Yorkshire. The caves were discovered by some lead miners in 1860 but their formation began around 300 million years ago.

What Can You Do at Stump Cross Caverns?

To visit the caves you have to wear a helmet as some of the passageways are low to walk through. There are also 65 steps down so pushchairs and carriers are not permitted. Kids can pick up an educational fossil quiz and they can learn from fun information signs along the way. This trail suits children aged 4 to 13-year-olds. For under 4s, there is a fairy door quiz with a prize of an extra £2.

When they uncovered the passageways they also found remains of prehistoric creatures such as wolverine, bison and reindeer. Make sure you dress warmly as the caves stay at 7 degrees all year round. Wellies or walking shoes are also recommended as the walkways and steps can be very damp.

There are some spectacular stalagmites and stalactites to be found. The passageways are lit along the way and they are one of Britain’s premier show caves. Some of the chambers and stalactites are named after what they resemble such as a Wedding cake, the chamber of pillars, the butcher’s shop and the twins. Children will have great fun figuring out what they are looking at and many are part of the quiz. Your visit then finishes with a 20-minute film detailing the history and discoveries of the caves. They also have a new panning area outdoors.
