Thackray Medical Museum

Thackray Medical Museum

The Thackray Museum of Medicine has recently reopened after a major £4 million refurbishment. It is located in the Harehills area of Leeds in West Yorkshire. At the museum, you can follow the story of medicine as you wander the grimy Victorian streets of Leeds.

Things to do at Thackray Museum of Medicine

Life in Victorian Leeds is a walkthrough reproduction of slum streets with authentic sights, sounds and smells. You follow the lives, ailments and treatments of eight Victorian characters. A lot of the experiences can be a bit gruesome for kids so make sure you take your kids when they’re a bit older.

There is a live theatre where you can watch gruesome operations taking place in their 19th-century operating theatre. There is a 1970s-style sexual health clinic, you can chart how well the world responds to crisis and discover the medical innovations that changed the world. There is a great number of interactive displays, this is a real hands-on museum.

Through play, creativity, talks, experiences, social events, and formal education they play a fitting tribute to our health heroes and they bring inspiration to the next generation of big thinkers. They have recently opened a fab indoor-themed play area for children under the age of 5.
