Verdant Works
Verdant Works in Dundee is one of Scotland’s most atmospheric and beautifully preserved industrial museums, offering a vivid window into the city’s remarkable textile past. Set within a restored 19th‑century jute mill, the museum tells the story of an industry that once shaped Dundee’s identity and powered its economy. The building itself is part of the experience: a rare surviving courtyard‑style mill, now a Category A listed site recognised for its national architectural importance.
Inside, the museum brings the world of jute to life through original machinery, interactive displays, and powerful storytelling. Visitors can explore the full journey of jute production, from raw fibre to finished products, and discover how Dundee became the global centre of the jute trade, employing around half of the city’s working population by the late 19th century. The collections cover everything from manufacturing techniques and engineering to the social history of mill workers, including women and children whose labour was central to the industry.
The museum’s refurbished spaces include the impressive High Mill, the oldest part of the complex, which reopened after extensive restoration and now houses large‑scale machinery and immersive exhibits. Visitors can also see demonstrations, films, archival photographs, and artefacts that reveal the global connections of the jute trade, particularly its links with India.
