Welsh Highland Heritage Railway
The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway is located in Porthmadog, North Wales. It is a short reconstructed heritage railway. The society was first formed back in 1972 to preserve and rebuild the railway which had originally operated from 1922 to 1936.
The railway offers a short train ride in heritage carriages to Pen-Y-Mount junction. This is around a mile from the station at Porthmadog. The train stops at Gelert’s Farm Halt for about half an hour on the return journey. This is where you can explore workshops and a museum before your final return.
There are hands-on displays within the heritage centre and subject to staff availability there may be the opportunity to ride on their miniature railway. The whole journey, including the half an hour stop, takes just under an hour. The train is usually hauled by a steam locomotive although at quieter times it may be a diesel.
