Wentworth Castle Gardens

Wentworth Castle Gardens are 60 acres of gardens maintained by the National Trust near Barnsley in South Yorkshire. The house itself is closed to the public but the gardens and parklands are beautifully maintained and are a great family-friendly place to visit.

What is there to do at Wentworth Castle Gardens?

As well as gardens, woodland and parkland to explore they often have annual family-friendly trails. All year round there is a Wilderness Sensory trail. You start at the top of Shrubbery Walk and you follow the arrows to discover a hidden part of the gardens. There are two parkland walks listed on their website but you can choose to go wherever suits you.

The gardens are the only listed Grade 1 parkland and gardens in South Yorkshire. There are 26 listed buildings and monuments within the grounds. As well as 60 acres of gardens there is also 500 acres of parkland. In the grounds, there is Stainborough Castle.

This is a fake castle that was built in the early 18th century. It was built on top of the hill to make visitors think it had been in the family for generations. There is a Victorian design conservatory from 1885, a Union Jack garden, Sun Monument and more. There is a large wooden play area with a large castle-like structure, plus plenty to climb, swing and slide on. It’s a lovely place for a picnic.

There is a cafe serving hot and cold food and drinks. You are welcome to bring a picnic.

Free, for members of the National Trust. Cheap for non-members. An adult standard ticket costs £5, children £2.50. Under 5s are free. Family tickets are available.

Dog friendly?

Dogs on short leads are welcome in the gardens and parkland. Dogs are welcome in the Long Barn café on weekdays and term time only. Assistance dogs only in the conservatory.
