Abbey Overview

Whitby Abbey sits high on the cliff on the south side of this popular seaside town in North Yorkshire. It has long been an important holy place and a seat of power. Its fate was sealed by Henry VII in 1539 when it became the ruins that you can see and visit today. It is run and maintained by English Heritage. The abbey has inspired many artists and writers including Bram Stoker who set part of Dracula here.

There is a large car park next to the abbey (pay and display) but you can also visit via the famous 199 steps from down in the centre of Whitby. There is quite an atmosphere about the abbey and kids will love that they can climb and explore the ruined walls and columns of the abbey.

The views down to Whitby and the harbour are stunning and it’s great fun spotting the pirate ships and other various tourist boats going in and out to sea. You can even take an open-top tourist bus up to the abbey.

There’s an explorer quest trail for the kids which is worth doing to lengthen your visit plus a new interactive guide. It doesn’t take very long to visit but there is an indoor museum where you can see artefacts found within the grounds of the abbey. There is also a very old picturesque church next to Whitby Abbey which has an equally old graveyard that you can walk around.

There is no on-site cafe but there are a few cafes and tearooms close by.

Ruined abbey with links to Bram Stoker, a small museum and a large shop. Plus an interactive guide and a kid’s trail. There are public toilets next to the entrance.

What are the ticket prices?

Free for members of English Heritage. An adult ticket without donation is priced at £10 and children 5-17 are £6.00. Other pricing options including family tickets are available.
