Wroxeter Roman City
Wroxeter Roman City is an English Heritage site located in Wroxeter, Shropshire. Wroxeter was once the fourth largest city in Roman Britain and today you can explore its Roman remains.
What is there to do at Wroxeter Roman City?
You can wander around the ruins and see the remains of the bathhouse plus other wall-type remains. At this site, there is a large reconstructed townhouse. It has been based on the design of a townhouse which once stood at the site at Wroxeter. It has a dining room, bath suite and replica Roman furniture.
You can discover the daily lives of the people who once lived here and there is an audio tour that you can take around with you to learn even more about the site and the objects that have been found here.
The viewing platform above the baths is the best starting point for your visit. It was enormous and hugely impressive in its design. There is also the iconic Old Work. This is a surviving 7-metre-high basilica wall which is the largest piece of free-standing Roman wall in the country.
The museum and audio tour give a sense of daily life at the site. It was mainly made up of foot soldiers and 500 or so cavalrymen. In the school holidays, they often run Roman-themed events, which help even more to give a sense of life at the time it was in use.
